Classroom Websites

Homewo makes it easy for educators to set up high-functioning classroom websites. It’s simple: just create a Homewo account and you’ll be posting homework assignments and uploading assignments to your website in a few clicks.

Why Use a Classroom Website?

Example of a Classroom Website 1

  • Store Files Online: as a teacher who has been using a classroom website since 2006, I can confirm that storing files online is a tremendous convenience. My colleagues often comment on how I don’t seem to carry anything in and out of the building anymore, and I confirm: “I’ve gone digital.” Yet, my efficiency in the classroom has only improved. If I get an email from a parent concerning a student’s missing assignments, I merely email them links to the missing assignments.
  • Communicate with Parents: often times, involved parents want to know everything that is going in the classroom. As much as we may want to help them keep up with their students, it is unreasonable to call homes everyday, and it can also be burdensome to send daily emails. But with a classroom website, interested parties can see exactly what I have planned on any particular school day. Not only will the know the activities, but they can access the same files and documents that I can: PowerPoint presentations, Word documents, PDFs, basically any file that I can view on my computer. And, Superstar Homewo users get an automatic email list that notifies subscribers each time you update your website, so that those parents who expect emails will receive them. I absolutely love this feature!
  • Help Students: Family emergencies happen. Suspensions are issued. Illnesses afflict. How much time have you spent in and out of class preparing and issuing assignments for absent students? Even if it’s only a few minutes at a time, those minutes add up. By using a classroom website, I can merely refer absent students and their representatives to my website. Writing a domain name on a small sheet of paper is much easier than digging for page numbers or scrambling to find vocabulary words when the administration interrupts your lesson to prepare absent work. Additionally, if a student missed yesterday’s lesson and is not prepared to complete today’s assignment, rather than having to reteach, you can just put them on a classroom PC and load up your slideshow on a classroom computer. Then you can continue to serve the students who were able to attend class, without leaving absent students behind. Doing this has proved to be a huge help in my classroom.

Getting Started

Sign Up For a Classroom Website
Signing up for a classroom website on Homewo.com is super easy, but I’ll walk you through the process just in case you need more information about anything.

    • Choose a username: Your username is separate from your display name. Your username is used for logging in to your classroom website. Your display name is shown to your visitors. You’ll set your display name later.
    • Enter your email: Before deciding which email address to use for this account, you should be aware of two things. First, this email address is visible as a contact button on all pages of your classroom website. For this reason you will want to use an address that is appropriately professional (not lilmama420@hotmail.com). Second, your visitors (the parents and teachers whom you refer to your site) may use this button to contact you. For this reason you will want to use an email that you check daily, or important, time-sensitive communications may evade your notice. Don’t make too big of a deal about selecting your email address- you can always change it later.

    • Select a Password: Choose one appropriately cryptic and always keep your password secret. Do not share your password with anyone. The security of your password is your responsibility and when two people know something, it’s not a secret anymore. Like your email address, however, you can always reset your Homewo.com password.
    • Review and Agree to TOS: When you use Homewo.com, you enter a legal contract. Be sure to review the terms before you agree to them. The terms are mainly written to protect Homewo from the litigious, but it is always a good practice to understand agreements before you enter them.
    • Choose a Sub-domain: Unless you are planning on using a custom domain name, your personalized web address will be a sub-domain of Homewo.com. What that means is that your web address will be structured as such: whatyouwanthere.homewo.com. Though Superstar members will be able to reassign custom domain names, your subdomain name will be permanent. For that reason, you may want to choose carefully.
    • Set your Site Title and Privacy Settings: Your site title is displayed on the header of your website. It is the most prominent information on the page. I’d suggest that you write something like, “Mr. or Mrs. So-and-So’s Class.” Your privacy settings determine whether you site may appear in search queries on sites like Google or within the Homewo search function. Don’t get stressed out about these decisions though because, as with your email address and password, you can change your site title and privacy settings from the “Settings” page at anytime.
    • Click “Signup”: You now have a classroom website. Click the tiny log-in button at the bottom right corner of your website, log-in, and begin posting homework assignments, uploading files, and customizing your site’s appearance and information.
